September is a season of fresh starts. Kids head back to school, routines begin to shift, and life finds a new rhythm. While schedules get busier, it is also the perfect time to focus on yourself. Think of it as your own wellness reset, a chance to recommit to healthy habits, try something new, or simply carve out time to recharge.

At Big Cedar Lodge, wellness is part of the guest experience. From fitness classes and spa amenities to outdoor adventures in the Ozarks, we are here to help guests and members find balance and renewal in every season. This month, we are excited to highlight one of our newest fitness offerings, including rucking, along with expert wellness advice, team spotlights, and upcoming events designed to inspire your journey in the heart of the Ozarks.
What is Rucking?

Did you know that only 19 percent of women meet the U.S. government’s recommendation of 150 minutes of weekly endurance activity plus strength training twice a week? Rucking is one activity that covers both and it is much easier to get started than you might think.
So, what exactly is rucking? Simply put, it is walking with weight. Rucking combines strength and cardio without the high impact of running, making it accessible for all fitness levels. Guests at Big Cedar can join guided classes led by our wellness specialists, who provide equipment generously donated by GORUCK, instruction, and encouragement along with music, camaraderie, and the breathtaking scenery of the Ozarks. Rucking is perfect for all levels of fitness, and participants can adjust the weight to match their own ability while making new friends along the way.
All September long, guests can take part in our new 3-mile rucking class – a fitness experience that blends movement, strength, and adventure. After being supplied with a weighted backpack based on your experience level, you’ll set out with our wellness specialists on a guided trek through the stunning Ozark landscape. No experience is required, and comfortable tennis shoes or walking shoes are recommended.
At the end of your journey, celebrate your accomplishment with a custom completion patch – a keepsake to remind you of your wellness milestone at Big Cedar Lodge.
Words of Wisdom from Dr. Will Cole

At our last Wellness in Nature retreat, we were honored to host functional medicine expert Dr. Will Cole. He shared this message with our community on the importance of self-care:
“Prioritizing self-care isn’t selfish – it’s foundational. In functional medicine, we understand that true wellness is a reflection of small, consistent choices that nourish your body, mind, and spirit. For many people, the hardest part of the journey is simply taking that first step. When you’ve been in survival mode – dealing with chronic stress, lingering inflammation, or hormonal imbalances – it can feel daunting to even begin. But healing doesn’t have to be complicated. Start by choosing one or two areas to support yourself each day: maybe it’s swapping processed foods for whole, nutrient-dense meals, going for a gentle walk outside, or carving out ten minutes of stillness before bed. These daily rituals aren’t just tasks – they’re acts of self-respect that tell your body it’s safe, loved, and supported.”
Stay tuned for more tips and insights from Dr. Cole and other industry experts as we gear up for the upcoming Wellness in Nature Retreat in January.

Meet Your Wellness Team: Spotlight on Drew Henderson

Hi, my name is Drew Henderson, and I am the Assistant Manager of the Recreation and Fitness Center at Big Cedar Lodge. I have been with Big Cedar for seven years and what I enjoy most about working in recreation is connecting with our guests and members. Being at the gym and pools gives me the perfect chance to meet new people and build great conversations.
I also love that Big Cedar allows me to be outdoors and surrounded by nature, it is one of my favorite parts of the job. Wellness is something I value because it is not just about staying active physically but also improving your mental well-being. When you take care of your body, your mindset improves too.
